CORAL REEFS are one of the most beautiful natural phenomena on Earth but they are very sensitive to changes in the environment as well. One global reason for coral decaying and fading is ocean acidification which is predicted to be greater in the coming century than in the last 300 million years. Another factor is the warming of the waters. When the temperature rises above a certain point, the symbiotic relationship between corals and coexisting creatures becomes disturbed.

The bleached corals stop growing, and if their damage is very serious they decay completely. According to a study published in 2008 “Science” magazine, corals have become the most threatened group on the planet. It is estimated that by 2030 90% of the reefs around the world will be under threat, and by 2050 all will be under threat.

This series includes photographs of objects made entirely of disposable plastic, such as bottles, mugs, straws, cosmetics and food packaging, etc. These objects represent future reefs. If we do not drastically limit production of plastic, especially disposable packaging, the reef will be permanently destroyed and replaced by synthetic creations of Anthropocene such as these.

KORALLIRIUTAT OVAT maapallon kauneimpia luonnonilmiöitä, mutta samalla hyvin herkkiä ympäristön muutoksille. Yksi globaali syy korallin rappeutumiseen ja haalistumiseen on merten happamoituminen, jonka ennustetaan etenevän tulevalla vuosisadalla enemmän kuin viimeisten 300 miljoonan vuoden aikana. Toinen vaikuttava tekijä on vesien lämpeneminen. Kun lämpötila kohoaa tietyn pisteen yläpuolelle, korallien ja niistä riippuvaisten eliöiden symbioottinen suhde häiriintyy.

Haalistunut koralli lakkaa kasvamasta ja pahimmillaan rappeutuu täysin. Science-lehdessä vuonna 2008 julkaistussa tutkimuksessa korallit nimettiin planeettamme uhanalaisimmaksi lajiksi. Ennusteiden mukaan riutoista uhkaa tuhoutua vuoteen 2030 mennessä 90 % ja vuoteen 2050 mennessä jo 100 %.

Valokuvasarjassa nähdään kokonaan kertakäyttömuovista valmistettuja pulloja, mukeja, pillejä, kosmetiikka- ja elintarvikepakkauksia jne. Ne edustavat tulevaisuuden koralleja. Ellemme rajoita radikaalisti muovin ja erityisesti kertakäyttöpakkausten tuotantoa, riutat tuhoutuvat pysyvästi ja ne korvautuvat tämänkaltaisilla synteettisillä antroposeenin luomuksilla.
