IN THE SUMMER of 2018, while living in Tampere by the shore of Lake Iidesjärvi, I woke up to a serious problem. The lake was almost entirely covered with thick and smelly blue-green algae.

I roamed the lake several times and found plenty of bizarre cyanobacterial formations.

My interest in blue-green algae arose, and I began to think about the causes behind this environ-mental problem. The blue-green algae looked beautiful and fascinating, although it is toxic and harmful to humans and other living organisms.

When creating the series, I wanted to emphasize the aesthetical aspect of the blue-green algae and thereby allure the viewer to ponder and become aware of the blue-green algae situation in our waters.

Often, people become aware of environmental problems only when they touch their own habitat when it is tangible. For example, the blue-green algae problem at the close-by-lake becomes reality only after swimming is prohibited there.

ASUESSANI KESÄLLÄ 2018 Tampereella Iidesjärven rannalla havahduin vakavaan ongelmaan. Järvi oli lähes kokonaan paksun ja haisevan sinilevän peitossa.
Kiertelin järveä useaan kertaan, löytäen useita outoja syanobakteerimuodostelmia.

Kiinnostuin yhä enemmän sinilevästä ja aloin pohtia tämän ympäristöongelman syitä. Sinilevä näytti kauniilta ja kiehtovalta, vaikka se on samalla myrkyllistä ja haitallista ihmisille ja muille eliöille.

Tätä kuvasarjaa tehdessäni halusin lähestyä ilmiötä esteettisestä kulmasta ja johdattaa siten katsojan pohtimaan ja tiedostamaan vesiemme sinilevätilanteen.

Ihmiset huomaavat ympäristöongelmat usein ainoastaan niiden liittyessä konkreettisesti heidän omaan elinympäristöönsä. Esimerkiksi lähijärven sinilevä muuttuu todeksi vasta sitten, kun uiminen siinä kielletään.
